Description: Phytosulfokine (PSK) is a 5-amino-acid secreted peptide that contains two sulfated tyrosines. PSK was initially identified as a growth-promoting signal involved in the “density effect” in plant cell cultures. Addition of PSK to culture medium significantly improves the efficiency of cellular proliferation, even when the initial cell population is below the critical density. It was later shown that PSK also promotes in vitro tracheary element differentiation, somatic embryogenesis, and pollen germination.PSK signaling affects potential for growth and cellular longevity, thereby exerting a pleiotropic effect on individual cells in response to environmental conditions.
